Freeing Tables from Frames

Applies to: Word 2003, Word 2007

Note: We also have a video on this topic in our How To Videos area.

Tables can be placed within a "frame" that displays the table at an absolute position on a page. Sometimes, this can have unintended consequences, and you need to know how to release the table from the frame.

Symptoms:

  • Table header takes up the whole page and will not adjust even when changing the margins.
  • The first row of the table will not print as the header row.
  • Unable to edit table.

How are they created?

Tables in frames are easy to create, even by accident: just drag the table to another position in the document. Word automatically puts the table in a frame!

The Fix:

Place cursor in table, navigate to Table > Table Properties and select None for Text wrapping.
