If you've used Word, PowerPoint or Excel 2007 yet, you've experienced the frustration of not knowing where your once familiar functionality has gone.

Microsoft's Office Labs attempts to ease the transition with a new Search Commands tab, allowing you to find your lost commands by typing the name into a simple search box.

Normal Search Commands

To get the new tab

  1. Close Word, Excel and PowerPoint, (the tab will update all three programs)
  2. Head to http://www.officelabs.com/projects/searchcommands/Pages/default.aspx
  3. Click on "Try It."
  4. Follow the installation instructions

Using the new Search Commands tab:

Search for "Find" in the Word Search Commands tab. You'll receive 59 different commands across 7 "pages" of Ribbon (use the "Previous" and "Next" buttons to navigate the pages).

Find Search Commands

In addition to displaying a list of possible commands, the Search Commands Ribbon will display the feature's location. This way, users can begin to map where old commands land in the new Ribbons. Some of these commands are "not in the Ribbon", lying beneath the tabs in various dialogue launchers. Using a right-click on the desired command from your Search Command results it can be promoted to your Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) for easier access and future use.
