Minimize Your Tabs: Put DocID where it belongs in Word 2007Applies to: Word 2007, DocXtools v6 With the release of the 2007 Office System, Microsoft organized its rich feature-sets on Ribbons organized by task. For example, "Home" is where you'll find commonly-used functionality, while Word's "Review" tab hosts features related to collaboration like comparison and tracked changes. Similarly, features which introduce elements into your document are available from the "Insert" tab. This navigation expedites adoption and improves productivity with native Word functionality—but what about functionality you must add into the application? For example, shouldn't DocID be on the "Insert" tab, not on a ribbon all its own? Learn how to put "DocID" on the "Insert" tab with Microsystems DocID functionality, which is part of DocXtools v6.
NOTE: This tip & trick assumes use of Microsystems DocID functionality. Step 1Navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsystems\DocID, locate the DocIDPanel.XML file and open it with Notepad or the XML editor of choice. Step 2Locate the following line within the XML: Step 3Change the below line as follows: NOTE: In Step 3, we've changed the "id" to "idMso", and the control name to "TabInsert" (this is case-sensitive). This identifies that Microsystems DocID functionality will be placed on native Word's "Insert" tab. Also note that the value your enter for label can be used to rename the Insert Tab, if desired. Step 4To conserve screen real estate, consider placing DocID functionality onto a Split Button as shown in the screen shot above. These lines accomplish that goal:
Step 5Save your changes to the DocIDPanel.xml file and launch Word. Your DocID functionality appears on the Insert Tab, right where it should be. |
