The Issue:
This issue occurred on a Word 2000 document (.doc format) opened by Word 2007 in Compatibility Mode. Once open, the file was then Saved As a .docx file. Upon inspection of the original Word 2000 document – and tracing the symptom back to the originating template – it was discovered that the original files exhibited signs of numbering corruption when Open & Repaired in Word 2003 (see Show Repairs illustration below).
The risk is that you won't know if you have corrupt numbering in your Word 2000 template.
The Solution
- Using Word 2007, reopen the original .doc version of the document.*
- Launch the DocXtools v6 Do It Yourself Cleanup feature.
- Expand the List Template group.
- Check Reweave Corrupt Numbering and click on
to execute.
- Click on the Office Button and Convert or Save As a Word Document.
* If the document is saved before running the DocXtools v6 “Reweave” feature, you will have to recreate the impacted numbered list.
In this situation, two widely-applied numbered lists lost the single list numbered List Template linked to styles (see Upon Open and After Save illustrations below).
Upon inspection of the original Word 2000 document – and tracing the symptom back to the originating template – it was discovered that the original files exhibited signs of numbering corruption when running Open & Repaired in Word 2003 (see illustration below).

The Recommendation:
To avoid, prevent, and eliminate this risk, consider the following to determine if your Word 2000 template has corrupt numbering:
- Ask us to perform a Document Audit in advance of your move to Office 2007, especially if your numbered styles have a legacy of being created through earlier versions of Word (e.g., Word 6, Word 2000 or Word 2002).
- Have DocXtools v6 run the Reweave Corrupt Numbering routine against your precedents, masters, or style templates.
